Steeped in the rhythms of her native Cuba and influenced by her love of the jazz Marialy Pacheco’s third solo piano album “Song’s That I Love” features eight “first take” tracks recorded over three hours at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in Brisbane.
“Song’s That I Love” captures the musical connections between Marialy’s classical foundations, Cuban heritage and instinctive passion for improvisation.
Opening with Frank Flynn’s dynamic composition “Mambo Inn” followed by a soulful rendition of the classic Simon and Garfunkel “Sound of Silence” Marialy continues to delight listeners with two breathtaking originals, the exquisite “Bremen” dedicated to her time spent in this tranquil German city and “The Sunshine State” a joyful, spirited composition of life in Queensland.
Traditional Cuban songs “Tres Lindas Cubanas” (3 Beautiful Cubans) and “Danza Para 4” further expose her formidable technique and honour the music of her countrymen while the inclusion of Jerome Kern classics “The Song Is You” and “The Way You Look Tonight” encapsulates her passion to take great melodies and infuse them with her inimitable approach and enchanting improvisations.
“Songs That I Love” is a captivating album of sound treasures that uncovers the vibrant musical talents of young pianist and composer Marialy Pacheco in her first Australian album release.
